Welcome to my Blog.
I am John Grey-Noble. I graduated from the Alberta College of Art in Calgary Alberta in 1974. I have painted traditionally for over thirty years. Time and space has become a concern in the past few years, I couldn’t find enough time to work on the large canvases I prefer and after moving to a smaller home I didn’t have the studio space I required either.
Two years ago I decided to re-invent my wheel, started to re-think how I painted. I have been involved in the print industry for over twenty years and for the past four years I have been working digitally producing giclee limited editions for other artists. I came to to the conclusion that I should bring digital technology into my paint box.
Technique
I start work on small canvases 8x10, 11x14, 12x16 and 16x20. I work in acrylics, acrylic mediums and gels to create an organic based texture field. When the textural ground is complete I do a high resolution scan and then set to work in the computer. This gives me the freedom to experiment with space and further build techniques to apply on other projects. I call this Acrylic Digital Collage. Currently I am working with basic geometric forms built with from the scanned images. As the process continues I plan to combine drawings, painted objects to merge into a form of surrealism.
Images
After the intial experiments I’ve settled on working in a 40”x60” format. Once I am satisfied with the image created I produce a single 12”x18” proof print on rag paper, if I am happy with the results I produce one canvas 22”x32” and hold the 40/60 in reserve.
I will not produce more one of each size I have mentioned.
